The Pharisees attempt to trap Jesus by forcing an impossible decision on him; should a woman caught in adultery be put to death, as the religious law demanded but would break Roman law (at the time) or spare her life which would break religious law, but obey Roman law. Jesus cunningly out-wits them and demonstrates love, mercy, and righteousness. Jesus also proclaims that he is the Light of the World and confronts unbelievers, declaring who their "real" father is.
