In this episode, we talk with Tanya Saga. She was born in Ecuador and but now lives in Japan. She started kendo in Ecuador and has participated in Latin America Championships obtaining second and third places as part of the national team. She also participated in the World Kendo Championships (Japan 2015 and Korea 2018) and joined International Seminars for Kendo Leaders in the American region and Japan. Tanya founded the Dojo Butokukai in her university in Ecuador.

  • KED Talk - Hard Yards at Budai with Ivo van Roij

    This is the Kendo Enlightened Discourse (KED) Talk series! This is a podcast-style series where we discuss vaguely kendo-related topics or whatever else comes to mind! In this episode, we talk with 0-year-old Ivo van Roij who hails from Tilburg in the Netherlands, where he started kendo at age 18. After graduating from design school in the Netherlands, Ivo went to Japan to study on the Budo Specialisation Program at the International Budo University. After leaving Budai, he returned to his hometown where he started his own dojo which currently has about 40 members who practise kendo, iaido and kyudo. Ivo moved to Beverly Hills in 2018 and joined the West LA Kendo Club while studying there. After returning home, he became Dutch champion in 2019. After receiving a job offer from Sony, he moved again to Japan where he now lives and trains in Tokyo, as well as occasionally at kendo powerhouse, the University of Tsukuba.

In this episode, we talk with Masahiro Imafuji from Japan, who is now resident in the USA. Kendo Renshi 6-dan Masahiro Imafuji started kendo at the age of seven at Shubukan Dojo in Itami City, Hyogo, Japan. He has been resident in the USA since 2004. Masahiro has had experience instructing kendo since 1993 in New Zealand, Guatemala, the USA and other countries. He was the Head Coach of the ECUSKF team for the national championships in 2011 and 2014. Masahiro also runs the Kendo-Guide.Com (Kendo For Life, LLC) website.

  • KED Talk - From Competitor to Coach with Kate Sylvester

    This is the Kendo Enlightened Discourse (KED) Talk series! This is a podcast-style series where we discuss vaguely kendo-related topics or whatever else comes to mind! In this episode, we talk with Renshi 6-dan Kate Sylvester. Shewas born in New Zealand and started kendo as a high school exchange student in Japan at the age of 15. She represented New Zealand at her first World Kendo Championships in 2000. Thereafter, Kate competed for Australia at every WKC between 2003-2015. At the 2018 WKC, she was head coach of the Australian national kendo team (women and men), leading Australia to their first medal placing. Currently residing in Sweden, Kate is now the head coach of the Swedish women's national kendo team and an assistant instructor at Föreningen Stockholms Kendo Allians (FSKA).

    This is the Kendo Enlightened Discourse (KED) Talk series! This is a podcast-style series where we discuss vaguely kendo-related topics or whatever else comes to mind! In this episode, we talk with Donatella Castelli. She was born in Bologna, Italy, and is a Kendo Kyoshi 7-dan. She started kendo at the age of 22 in 1985. Donatella has practised kendo wherever she has moved for her work in Italy, Germany, Japan and the Netherlands. Donatella was a member of the Italian national team from 1990 until 2003 and national team coach from 2016 till 2020, and has also been president of the Italian Kendo Confederation and an international referee.
