About this listen

Kupala Brighton is a cultural project inspired by the Ukrainian Kupala midsummer festival that came to the city of Brighton & Hove in 2022, as the city's new Ukrainian community began to form. We're here to celebrate Ukrainian cultural traditions, explore how communities today reinvent them, to show why they matter deeply to Ukrainians today, and to interweave them with the other traditions – old and new – around us here on the south coast of England.Kupala Brighton Social Sciences

  • Trubaitsi: wetland spirits and night spirits in a Ukrainian village
    Sep 6 2025

Our Kupala Brighton project was inspired by the Ukrainian Kupala midsummer festivals held in Brighton since 2022, and by the landscape around Trubaitsi, a village in the middle of Ukraine. In August 2025 we made the journey from Brighton to Trubaitsi, where we walked and talked on the edge of the wetlands: about nature, the village, childhood, imagination, belonging, spirits, and the sounds of war in the air.
