  • Are leaders developed? Or do they emerge?
    Oct 26 2023

Are leaders developed? Or do they emerge? This is one of the most debated questions in leadership studies. In the context of leadership, assigned leadership and emergent leadership are two distinct concepts.  Assigned leadership refers to individuals appointed to formal management or supervisor positions within an organization who derive their authority from their roles within the company hierarchy.

Whereas emergent leadership is characterized by employees who take on informal leadership roles based on their own initiative and the perception of their colleagues. These individuals may not have a formal leadership title but exhibit leadership characteristics by voluntarily taking on tasks, helping others, and encouraging consensus among coworkers. Emergent leaders often gain respect among employees by demonstrating hard work and empathy. This video will explore if one leadership style is preferable over the other.
