Born On 23rd Dec 1730, Mahadji Shinde became the king of Gwalior in the year 1768. He was instrumental in restoring the Maratha rule in North India and modernising his army. He skilfully defeated the British army led by Colonel Egerton at Wadgoan and compelled him to sign a treaty, which was not well taken by the then British Governor General Warren Hastings. He repeatedly sent his armies to defeat Mahadji when the later refused to give up, but Warren Hastings was finally forced to sign the peace treaty of Saraighat when Major Camac, Captain Phopham and Col Murre along with their armies were collectively defeated by Mahadji.
