In the wake of her husband Big Jims passing, widowed cattle rancher Hetty Thompson has managed to hold her own. With the help of Barney, her well-meaning but somewhat dim ranch hand, and Johnny, her devoted assistant manager whom she saved from a troubled past, life on the ranch has been relatively stable. However, everything changes when the government seizes a large portion of Frenchman‚As Flat to establish an atomic testing ground. Despite Hetty and her neighbors protests, the military constructs fences around their grazing lands. Initially, life continues as usual, but when Hettys chickens start laying golden eggs and her prized Guernsey cow begins producing explosive milk, the ranch community faces a new and bizarre challenge.
