About this listen

Former mental health professional and survivor of domestic violence and abuse. My goal is to bring awareness, give voices to others, and reach those who need help. 

I also hope to provide useful tools in dealing with trauma and grief. I have suffered many close losses in my life, the two closest being my brother in a car accident in 1997, and my father to cancer in 2015. 

I have worked with just about every population. Case management for severely emotionally disturbed children in Charleston, SC., an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team clinician in Chicago, IL., working with adults diagnosed with persistent and severe mental illness, and on an adult inpatient psychiatric unit in Atlanta, GA.  My goal here is to help a broader group of individuals with various needs.

    Today I had a great conversation with another survivor of domestic violence and abuse. I greatly appreciate her courage to come on and share. Something she had never done before.

    We discussed safe ways of escaping the situation, as well as the need for change in how these crimes are addressed. 

    We also discussed a couple of high profile cases in which the person on the receiving end of the abuse was ultimately killed. That could have been either of us. Any of us. We were lucky.

    This is my conversation with Allison Dickson, a brilliant author who also has her own podcast called Ding Dong Darkness Time. Huge fan. I'm a total Ding Dong.

    It is a long episode, so I am not adding music for this one. We talk about my experiences with domestic violence, the losses of my brother and father, as well as my work as a mental health professional.

    We do some giggling and lots of ums, but I tried to catch as many as I could. I'm new to this, so please be patient. I swear (I hope) I will get better as I go along.
