Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeon Associate Professor Payal Mukherjee is our first guest on the show, sharing her vast knowledge in the area of ENT, all while championing women in medicine. Professor Mukherjee is an innovator in the area of bio printing for medical advancements and is passionate about encouraging young women to consider a career in medicine.

In this episode Professor Mukherjee shares insights into her career, how she got where she is, the importance of collaboration and why her daughter is her biggest inspiration.

Associate Professor Payal Mukherjee is an adult and pediatric ear, nose and throat surgeon in Sydney, specializing in advanced ear surgery, cochlear implants and lateral skull based surgery. Her research specializes in ear bionics using 3D printing and bioprinting. She was awarded the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Michael Donlon Medal for outstanding contribution to the art and science of surgery.

She was the Eureka Prize finalist for Interdisciplinary Research in 2022. Payal has a passion for global translation of Australian innovation in biotechnology. She's immediate past Chair of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, New South Wales State Committee. A member of the Advisory Committee of the Therapeutic Goods Administration and an expert panel of the Medical Devices Fund at New South Wales Health. She's also an executive member of the section of Academic Surgery. Chair of the Research and Evaluation for the Australian Safety and Efficacy Register of New Interventional Procedures in Surgery. And she's the innovation lead at the Royal Prince Alfred Institute of Academic Surgery.

She is passionate about gender equity in surgery, as well as developing STEM skills that is science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in young girls. Payal was a finalist of New South Wales Premier's Women of the Year Awards in 2019 and was awarded a Women in Surgery Leadership Award in 2022.
