  • The Blacklining Podcast
    Feb 6 2025

In this episode, Melony and Derek discuss their podcast Blacklining Forum.

The Blacklining Forum reflects our awareness of redlining, the systemic and notorious practice in the home lending industry that excluded generations of Black people from the housing market, and which devalued Black and Brown communities across the United States.

    They answer the following questions:

    • How did you become involved in real estate?
    • What brought you two together?
    • Why are you starting a podcast about RE?
    • Why did you choose the Blackining Forum as your podcast name?
    • What will differentiate your podcast from others?
    • How do you define financial freedom?

For Melony: As a real estate advisor, what do you want home buyers to talk about with their financial advisor before searching for property?

For Derek: How can real estate fit into someone’s overall investment portfolio?

Affiliated with Gibson Sotheby’s International Realty, Melony Swasey and her Good Boston Living team provide intimate, insightful advice to folks buying and selling homes throughout Metro Boston. And through close referral connections with Sotheby's Realty advisors around the U.S. and

internationally, Melony and her team satisfy the full scope of their clients' needs and dreams. Forging genuine, trusting relationships since 2010, Melony works closely with home buyers and sellers of all stages of life, guiding them to intelligent, winning decisions in the context of fast-moving markets.

Derek Lumpkins is an entrepreneur, consultant, and writer who works and lives at the intersection of intentional community engagement and meaningful social change. A Boston native, Derek draws upon over a decade of experience supporting the growth and visibility of communities of color through work in the for-profit, non-profit, and higher ed sectors. Derek launched his consultancy, ReFresh Strategies, in 2020 during the national and worldwide

protests in support Black lives. Corporate America’s resulting release of vague and tepid statements supporting social justice pushed him to recognize that 20th-century performative approaches to community engagement and allyship were unsuccessfully being applied to more complex 21st-century situations. With an eye toward sustainable relationships and fresh perspectives, Derek works with consulting and coaching clients to design mutually-beneficial,

progressive, creative, ethical, and socially-just solutions that push at the boundaries of the status quo to create meaningful change.
