This episode features Marcel Martin, who is an intervention specialist with Center of Hope in Baltimore, Maryland. The Center of Hope is an Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention grantee that is supported by the National Gang Center’s Training and Technical Assistance program. 3.  Applying this knowledge in community violence intervention efforts focused on youth and families with multigenerational gang associations

This episode focuses on understanding the impact of trauma on those exposed to gang-involved violence and on how trauma-informed policing can be applied to interrupt the cycle of violence.  Topic areas include: 

1. Understanding how trauma impacts those exposed to gang-involved violence and contributes to the cycle of violence 
2. Understanding how traditional responses may negatively impact outcomes for victims, witnesses, and offenders
3.  Applying principles of trauma-informed policing to interrupt the cycle of violence and improve outcomes in communities affected by gang violence  

This episode focuses on identifying opportunities for intervention along the course of youth gang association and applying this knowledge to develop community violence intervention efforts aimed at interrupting the cycle of violence. Topic areas include: 

1. Reviewing the dynamics of gang involvement including “pushes and pulls” that motivate youth gang association and the trajectory of gang embeddedness 
2. Understanding factors that lead to the process of disengagement from gang association including life course events and the “pushes and pulls” that motivate to desistance 
3.  Identifying opportunities for intervention along the course of gang association and leveraging this knowledge in community violence intervention efforts 

This episode shares lessons learned from David L. Carter, Ph.D., a professor and researcher with the Michigan State University School of Criminal Justice.  This conversation highlights Dr. Carter’s work in Homicide Process Mapping:  Best Practices for Increasing Homicide Clearances, focusing on how law enforcement can improve investigative outcomes in communities impacted by serious and entrenched gang and gun violence problems.
