• Old Clothes in the Attic and a Drum Kit in the Living Room with School House
    Jan 20 2026

    Send us a text

School House is a folk band from Ottawa comprised of Joel, Mitch, and Dave. It's hard to sum up how their friendship's all connected and led them to become roommates and live in an old school house - but they tell us everything in our episode of the podcast.

From the drum kit in the living room, to exploring the attic and finding an old box of clothes; to that box of clothes becoming part of their identity.

The band recorded their first album right inside the old school house they lived in - that and a number of loud parties involving 300 lbs of old speakers, and a few more antics happened in that house.

We had a great time chatting with School House about their musical influences and upbringing, winning Mariposa Music Fest's Artist Showcase and following that up with winning the Boots and Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase in 2025.

This year, the band has a lot on the go.

They just dropped their brand new single "Live While I'm Alive", with their second full length album, Homeland releasing February 27th.

You can also catch the band on tour with their pal (and another Front Porch Artist to Watch), Braden Lam this spring!

Keep up with all things School House on Instagram and TikTok.

  • "This Is the Chapter I’ve Been Waiting For” with MacKenzie Porter
    Jan 6 2026

Welcome back for the Season 5 premiere of On The Porch with Front Porch Music! A brand new season, a fresh chapter for the podcast, and an episode that perfectly sets the tone for what’s ahead.

We’re kicking things off with a multi-CCMA nominated, back to back Female Artist of the Year, multi-instrumentalist, and 6-time number one at Canadian country radio. With a credit reel like that, we're more than excited to have MacKenzie Porter to kick off Season 5.

A Canadian country star, Nashville-based artist, actress, and mom joins us for an honest, wide-ranging conversation about creativity, career evolution, and doing things on your own terms.

In this episode, MacKenzie takes us back to her roots in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where growing up in a musical family laid the foundation for everything that followed. From classical training at a young age to chasing big dreams far from home, her story is one built on family support, resilience, and trusting her instincts.

We also dive into how motherhood has influenced her career ... not by slowing her down, but by sharpening her focus and creativity. MacKenzie shares what it really looks like to balance family life with touring, recording, and acting, and why she hopes her story encourages other women in the industry to believe they don’t have to choose one or the other.

Another highlight of our chat was recounting the insane 2025 that happened for Thelma and James, the band she formed alongside her husband. What started as a spontaneous creative moment turned into a full-fledged project, reminding us that some of the best ideas come when you stop following the rules, or throw them out entirely.

We also talk about what’s next for MacKenzie, including new music, an upcoming tour with Luke Combs, and her growing role in the series 9-1-1: Nashville.

Follow MacKenzie Porter on TikTok and Instagram.

  • [NEW SHOW] mastered. The Business Of Music Episode 1
    Oct 21 2025

    Send us a text

Hey everyone! This week, we’re doing something a little different — instead of our regular On The Porch episode, we’re bringing you the first full episode of our new limited series, Mastered: The Business of Music.

Mastered pulls back the curtain on the music industry, talking with major players about marketing, touring, sync licensing, being a DIY artist, and so much more — all the real-world advice artists and industry professionals need.

We’re excited to share this full episode with you today, and don’t worry — we’ll be back with our regular On The Porch format next week. You can also head over to the Mastered feed to catch the rest of the series.

Joelle May’s career has spanned across public relations, label management, events, and more. One area she’s worked in for over a decade is sync and licensing.

And I know what you’re thinking - wtf is sync and licensing? This is exactly why we thought it’d be great to sit down with Joelle and really unpack that.

Joelle has placed music across television, video games, and commercials in North America and Europe.

In this episode, we get to the bottom of what sync and licensing is, how to get your music placed (spoiler: it’s not easy, especially on your own), and a little bit about the legalities and how royalties work.

Annika Catharina's family background influenced her love for performance. Growing up in a family that was partial to music, theatre, and the arts, she herself was also a dancer.

Theatre and live performance is what actually helped her to overcome shyness, something she still manages to this day.

Speaking of the big stage, Annika has had quite the year. She was a semi-finalist in SiriusXM's Top of the Country competition, and also a semi-finalist in this year's Emerging Artist Showcase at Boots and Hearts Music Festival.

Her single "Love and Hate" is at radio now, was just featured as Bell's iHeartFutureStar, and is currently Rogers One To Watch. The single is her first Top 50 at Canadian country radio.

With lots more music on the way, her latest single "Under Covers" is out now!

Follow Annika Catharina on Instagram and TikTok.

  • From Six Strings To The Big Stage with Cottage Springs with Mac Rumbolt
    Aug 26 2025

This week On The Porch, we’re joined by Mac Rumbolt. Mac is the winner of the Cottage Springs Country Rising contest, where he took home the grand prize of $10,000, and an artist development package with Starseed Entertainment.

Mac comes from small-town Nova Scotia, where he learned to play guitar at just five years old. Unsure of how a career in music may unfold, he initially headed to Alberta for an apprenticeship as a Harley Davidson mechanic. One drive by shooting and a leg amputation later, Mac found himself back at home working in behavioural health.

Unable to play sports anymore, Mac turned back to his guitar and writing music, a place of comfort while he rehabbed his injuries. A Facebook ad and a dream later, Mac applied for the Country Rising contest and found himself the winner.

This summer, he opened for the Reklaws in Windsor, along with their back to back sold out shows at the legendary Kee To Bala.

We can’t wait to see what’s next from Mac, including a single release in the near future!
