  • Opportunities and Challenges for a Sustainable Fashion industry with Rohan Batra
    Sep 15 2022

According to the UNFCCC, carbon emissions from the apparel industry are set to cross 60 percent by 2030. In Asian countries like India and China, emerging fashion trends have increased the carbon footprint per garment due to coal-fuelled plants. It has been claimed that the production doubled from 2000 to 2014 and the purchase index of an average consumer increased by 60 percent.

This led to a “fast fashion cycle” wherein consumers are purchasing clothes for summer, autumn, spring, and winter, which has forced the fashion industry towards unsustainable fashion. This means the sector produces high volumes of synthetic fibers, polyester, nylon wastewater, and plastic waste.

In this episode, we have Rohan Batra, Chief Manager- Sustainability at M&S India, talking about sustainability initiatives along with their opportunities and challenges that have been adopted amongst the fast fashion leaders, including sustainable supply chain management.

  • Single-Use Plastic Ban : Opportunities and Challenges with Dr R. Rangaprasad
    Aug 27 2022

Plastics have become a part of everyday life—they’re used in food packaging, cars, and innumerable household items we rely on for a better quality of life. The production of plastic has increased substantially, India is generating about 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste annually and it has almost doubled in the last five years. And the single largest category of plastics is single-use plastics. These disposable plastics, which are used only once before they’re thrown away or recycled, are largely used for packaging and generate the most waste. In the 4th United Nations Environment Assembly held in 2019, India had piloted a resolution on addressing single-use plastic products pollution and aligning with this vision, the single use plastic ban was implemented in India from July 1, 2022.

In today’s episode we’d understand the opportunities and challenges that lie with this single use plastic ban and what’s next for companies and individuals in terms of adopting sustainable packaging.
