  • Indra's lesson to the proud brahmin
    Aug 20 2026

Once upon a time, a Brahmin who dearly tended his beautiful garden grew enraged when a cow ate his prized mango sapling. In a fit of fury, he beat the cow to death with a stick. When the villagers condemned him for committing the grave sin of slaying a sacred cow, he defended himself deceitfully, arguing, 'Lord Indra is the presiding deity of the hands; therefore, the sin belongs to Indra, not me.'

Hearing this from the heavens, Lord Indra took the guise of an elderly Brahmin and visited the garden. He began praising the breathtaking layout, the lush fruit trees, and the well-maintained walkways. The Brahmin proudly claimed all the credit, boasting that every tree was personally chosen and planted by him through his own skill and effort.

At that moment, Indra confronted him sharply: 'If all the credit and beauty of this garden belong solely to you, how is it fair to shift only the blame of killing the cow onto Indra?' Realizing his hypocrisy, the Brahmin hung his head in profound shame.

Moral: Claiming credit for good deeds while shifting the blame for wrongdoings onto others or destiny is pure hypocrisy. We alone are responsible for our actions and their consequences.

Ideal Rule and Sudden Invasion: King Ramabhupathi ruled his kingdom with great care and justice, ensuring his people lived in peace and prosperity. Jealous of his growing fame, a neighboring king launched a sudden, unprovoked attack and captured the kingdom.

Exile in the Forest: Following his wise minister's counsel to wait for the right moment, the king escaped secretly and took refuge in a mountain cave in the Madhura forest. Filled with sorrow, he deeply regretted not keeping his army prepared and felt devastated by his people's suffering.

The Spider's Lesson: While deep in thought, Ramabhupathi noticed a spider trying to weave its web on the cave ceiling. It fell multiple times, ruining its progress, but refused to give up. With relentless perseverance, it climbed back up and successfully completed a beautiful web.

Regaining the Kingdom: Inspired by the spider's determination, the king regained his confidence. He secretly returned, gathered a strong army with the help of his trusted minister and commanders, attacked the enemy, and reclaimed his throne.

Moral: Failure is not the end; with unwavering perseverance and continuous effort, one can overcome even the greatest challenges to achieve success.

The Merchant's Greed: A woodcutter named Rangadu enters a lush forest and plans to cut down the trees for profit. However, realizing his axe lacks a handle, he sits disheartened beneath a tree.

The Tree's Generosity: Feeling pity for Rangadu, the tree offers one of its branches to serve as an axe handle, ignoring the warnings of neighboring trees.

The Betrayal: Rangadu fits the branch onto his axe and immediately chops down the very tree that helped him, intending to return tomorrow for the rest.

    Moral

Never repay kindness with harm, and never arm the selfish, as blind trust can lead to one's own destruction.
