In today’s polarized discourse, extreme narratives dominate. The far left’s narrative sees America as an oppressor. The far right’s narrative sees America as being overtaken by foreigners. The left embraces pluralism but rejects patriotism. The right embraces patriotism but rejects pluralism. These loud narratives crowd out more moderate, majoritarian perspectives. Neither extreme narrative is true to the American spirit or advances the American project.
Patriotic Pluralism is an old idea that lies dormant in our body politic. What would it take for us to resurrect patriotic pluralism? What are its various iterations?
