The Hirschfeld Institute: The Burning of Queer History

May 1933. Berlin. The Nazis burn books in a public square.

But few people know exactly what was being destroyed.

Among those books were thousands of documents from the Institute for Sexual Science — founded by Magnus Hirschfeld, a Jewish physician and pioneering sexologist.

The Institute was unlike anything else in the world. It studied sexuality, gender identity, and relationships decades before most societies were prepared to discuss these topics. It provided counseling. It trained physicians. It created space for queer and gender-nonconforming people to find answers, support, and community.

It was, by most measures, one of the most important queer institutions of the twentieth century.

And the Nazis understood exactly what it represented.

This episode explores what the Institute was, why it mattered, why the Nazis targeted it, and what knowledge was lost forever when they burned it down.

The destruction of the Hirschfeld Institute is not a footnote to Nazi history. It is a story about how power suppresses knowledge. How authoritarian movements erase inconvenient truths. How an entire era of queer research was burned — and how long it took to rebuild what was lost.

    ABOUT QUEER UNCHARTED:

The stories of queer history that were erased, suppressed, or forgotten.

The people who fought for liberation. The institutions that were destroyed.

The knowledge that was burned. The rights that are still being fought for.

This is the history that power tried to erase.
