About this listen

Question The Default is a podcast that challenges the unspoken rules and harmful norms shaping modern life.

Host Harry Corin is joined by guests from sport, entertainment, politics, and academia as they explore some of the biggest issues we face today. From mental health, masculinity, and addiction to the growing impact of AI on our health, the series responds to the headlines and conversations shaping the world right now.

Too many of our struggles persist because we accept “that’s just the way things are.” This series challenges that – opening up honest conversations about what it really takes to move forward.

Created in partnership with Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), Question The Default goes beyond awareness to uncover the systems, stories, and beliefs that need to change.

  • Professor Ann John: Suic*de Prevention, Young People, and AI
    Jan 14 2026

Harry is joined by Professor Ann John, Professor of Public Health and Psychiatry at Swansea University Medical School, and one of the UK’s leading voices in suic*de and self-harm prevention.

Ann advises the Welsh Government, works with Public Health Wales, and has helped shape national standards and guidance that influence how suic*de prevention is approached across health, media, policy and workplaces.

In this grounded and insightful conversation, Harry and Ann explore why suic*de can’t be understood through single causes – and why prevention has to focus on systems, environments and opportunity, particularly for young people.

They discuss the online world, media reporting, gambling-related harm, and the growing role of AI in mental health – where evidence is emerging, but safeguards are still catching up.

    They speak candidly about:

    • Why suic*de risk is dynamic, not fixed

    • How media reporting can increase or reduce harm

    • Gambling-related harm and mental health

    • AI, young people and missing safeguards

    • Why prevention must go beyond individual resilience

This episode offers a clear, evidence-led look at what actually helps prevent harm – and what can unintentionally make things worse.

  • Oli Patrick: The Truth About Energy and Recovery
    Jan 7 2026

In a world increasingly obsessed with health and wellbeing, why do so many people still feel exhausted?

In this episode, Harry is joined by Oli Patrick – performance physiologist and creator of The Energy Equation – for a revealing conversation about energy, recovery, and why modern life is draining us.

With over 25 years working across elite sport, healthcare and executive health, Oli shares what he’s learned from seeing thousands of people who were told they were “healthy” on paper, yet felt far from well in real life.

Together, they explore how stress, sleep, recovery and purpose interact – and why effective and intentional recovery is one of the most critical areas of the energy equation.

    Oli speaks openly about:

    - Why wellbeing is booming while people feel worse

-The difference between lifespan and health span

    - Why fatigue is a biological signal, not a failure

    - How modern life keeps the body in a constant state of alert

    - Getting the best from wearable tech

    - The importance of recovery beyond sleep

This episode is about understanding what your body is responding to – and how to rebuild energy in a way that actually works.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing “all the right things” but still feel drained, this conversation is for you.
