• Kaylee Golding | How to make it in radio
    Nov 8 2022

Kaylee Golding is a multi-talented broadcaster & DJ who has worked across the dial and is quickly becoming a firm favourite on UK airwaves. A driver of her success is Kaylee’s personable presenting style and relentless work ethic for creating content.

This has earned her presenting and producing roles at BBC, commercial and community stations alike. Stations including: BBC 1Xtra, BBC WM, Hits Radio Pride, Gaydio, KISS FRESH, No Signal & Reprezent.

Kaylee's journey has not been entirely plain sailing though. When she started out, the radio industry didn't have many people who looked and sounded like her. And this limited where she thought she could work.

With this, Kaylee discusses some challenges that people starting broadcasting careers face. As well as providing tonnes of insight in to how aspiring presenters and producers can make it in radio.

  • Carmel Holt: Amplifying Female Voices with SHEROES Radio
    Jul 8 2022

Carmel is a multi-talented broadcaster who has worked in the American radio industry since the 90s. During this time, she’s been an award-winning music director, a midday and a full-time host, a revered interviewer and a regular NPR contributor. Carmel has the unique experience of working at forward-thinking commercial and public stations, Radio Woodstock and WFUV, respectively.

But throughout her career, Carmel has been acutely aware of having to operate in a male-dominated space. One where women were not given equal opportunities, in both programming and in the radio profession itself.

Recognising the resounding detriment this has, Carmel left WFUV in 2019 to start Sheroes. Sheroes includes a syndicated radio show of the same name and the podcast, Mixtape Memoir.

Sheroes focuses on the most important and interesting musicians of recent times. These musicians also happen to be womxn or female-identifying. Not only does Sheroes ensure their contributions are being archived in music history, but it seeks to highlight how male-dominated radio programming often is and calls for change.

  • James Hazell & Tim Gough: The Success of Gen X
    Jun 24 2022

James Hazell and Tim Gough are talented broadcasters with a wealth of experience in local radio. Between them they’ve managed stations, overseen stations rebranding, and presented across the dial. Individually, they’ve worked at the likes of BBC Radio Suffolk, Radio Trent and Saga Radio.

James Hazell left the BBC in 2021 after presenting there for 15 years. Within 6 months, he did something extraordinary. He set up Gen X Radio Suffolk, a local commercial station for his home county. James got some other broadcasters - like Tim - on board and the station has gone from strength to strength.

Despite being only less than 6 months old, Gen X Radio regularly gets 10,000 listeners. In this episode of Radio & Co, Lucy talks to James and Tim about their journey, how big media brands are not meeting the demand for local radio, and everything it takes to be successful.
