About this listen
Spencer and Cameron are talking all about good ole Resident Evil Code Veronica on the latest Silent Evil Podcast. Coming out originally on Sega Dreamcast in 2000 and looking as realistic as possible for the time. With the full 3d environments and cutscenes making it feel like the full movie experience. The game later came out PS2 and GameCube with the Code Veronica X version. HD Remaster on PS3 and Xbox 360 too. Generally, just adding in more cutscenes and expanding on Wesker's whole reason for being in the game. You can play any of the iterations, though the Dreamcast version will always have a special place in my upbringing.
This game always felt just huge! And gameplay wise it is the longest of the Resident Evil games at this point. Originally this was supposed to carry the number of 3 but Sony got their panties in a bunch and claimed they wanted the number on their console. Silly rabbit. Well, Sega like usual, always got the short end of the stick but they still got first dibbs on literally one of the greatest classic styled, survival horror games out there with Code Veronica. Funny enough, back in the day, my friends and I referred to CV as RE4. Well, until the actual 4 came out.
This is the story of Claire Redfield, just 3 months after the Racoon City events of Resident Evil 2 and 3. She is still out searching for her brother Chris and is now in a Paris facility of Umbrella. After some John Woo like action, she is captured and sent to the Rockfort Island Prison where all hell has just broken loose and you know what that means. The T-Virus has no run rampant through the island, and it is up to Claire to make her way back to freedom, joining forces with a Leonardo DiCaprio lookalike named Steve. Who really goes to show, some people just have all the dumb luck in survival.
Their journey finally takes them to a remote laboratory/facility of Umbrella in Antarctica, where the game definitely starts to take some Thing turns. Chris comes in the second half of the game to now rescue Claire, solve the Ashford mystery, and run into his old nemesis, Albert Wesker. This game is so close to feeling like a perfect cap off to an excellent trilogy minus just a couple things that open up for another sequel.
Who knows what might be in store for Code Veronica, a full tilt remake maybe? Though you somewhat have one with The Darkside Chronicles and then an alternative playthrough with Gun Survivor 2. But we never know what Capcom might have next for us. Maybe they can grab Shinji Mikami and have him return to work his magic.
So, come join us for the run through retrospective discussion, as we deep dive into the lore, gameplay mechanics, and give a retro review on our modern experience. Let us know your thoughts on the game, survival horror titles, and what we should play next.
