This episode marks the first episode in the role model series. In these episodes, we will break down a character and world that they live in to learn more about ourselves. Part 1 of 1998's Mulan covers from the beginning of the movie up until the song, "I'll make a man out of you." Throughout the intro we see that the culture is patriarchal, and the people have internalized the view that men are superior to women. Unwavered by what society expects of her, Mulan will forge her own path and will be forced to fit in as a man. Because Mulan is put in this extreme position, the audience is able to learn from how she chooses to either give in or double down on what makes her different.
