  • Special Edition - Royal Privacy Breach Highlights Healthcare Cybersecurity Risks
    Jun 24 2026

In a story that has re-ignited the conversations not only on data privacy, but also, in particular and most importantly, the danger of insider threats, a former healthcare worker at London's private The London Clinic was formally cautioned after attempting to obtain and sell confidential medical information linked to Catherine, Princess of Wales, during her cancer treatment and recovery period. The UK's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) concluded that the individual's actions amounted to deliberate misuse of personal and sensitive data for financial gain.

Although the investigators found no wider systemic failings at the hospital, but the incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by insider threats.

    Why it matters?
As we had always reiterated here on the SecureAfrique podcast, Cybersecurity isn't always about hackers breaking in from outside. Sometimes the biggest risk comes from trusted insiders with legitimate access. For healthcare organisations across Africa and the world, protecting patient data requires not only strong technology controls but also strict access monitoring, staff awareness, and a culture of privacy compliance.
