About this listen

Seeing From the Inside Out is the heart/brain-child of writer and storyteller Gina Blitstein who interviews guests to learn and discern the story that dwells within them so they can indeed be known, from the inside out. Gina firmly believes that our stories are our legacy and a powerful way of connecting as humans.

Every two weeks, an episode will drop, highlighting a fascinating person, eager to tell the personal, authentic tale of their life’s journey, a lesson learned, a defining moment; something unique only they can express from their own life experience.

In a world hell-bent on stirring division and pitting us against one another, Gina sees this podcast as a celebration of the stories that ground us to our shared humanity and remind us we have so much more in common than that which separates us.

Gina’s modest goal… building human connection, (and making the world a more open-hearted place) one story at a time.

My friend Krista Swisher and I met through Humans on the Verge, a personal development group, both of us seekers of self-expression and a sense of agency in a world hellbent on keeping us quiet and complacent.

I admire her greatly for picking up her paintbrushes (and other implements of pigment application) and claiming her rightful moniker as an artist in the world - and I love even more that her work is recognized as gallery-worthy.

You can see Krista’s paintings on her website (and on display from time to time if you're lucky).

The holidays (and other times when presents are exchanged) are a fabulous time to consider the one-of-a-kind, personal gift of art; Krista even offers commissions as an option if you’ve got something specific in mind.

    Producer's Note:

What a great conversation this was. My brain is always working to find connections from what I hear and experience to song lyrics, and there were two instances in this episode that immediately brought to mind "What Light" which is one of my favorite songs by Wilco, penned by the amazingly insightful Jeff Tweedy.

Here are the verses, I bet you can attach them to the relevant sections of the discussion:

And if you're trying to paint a picture
But you're not sure which colors belong
    Just paint what you see
Don't let anyone say it's wrong

    and

And if the whole world's singing your songs
And all of your paintings have been hung
    Just remember what was yours
    Is everyone's from now on

Here's the song if you would like to give it a listen:

This episode features my friend Erika Shapiro who did me the great honor of interviewing me for my first episode of Seeing From the Inside Out, doing a fantastic job of introducing me to my listeners. Erika was the perfect choice for that role, because she’s a natural conversationalist who brings warmth and curiosity to a conversation.

On the other side of the microphone in this episode, Erika discusses her journey of self discovery and finally listening to her own innate wisdom to lead the way to a sense of freedom and fulfillment - even through challenges. The way she navigates her “new” life is nothing short of heroic - she’s a real inspiration to me!

Erika is a mental fitness coach at Finding Your Inner Awesome.

My guest Diana J. Brodie is a one-of-a-kind person you’re going to love meeting! She’s been a bright light in my life since the day I met her six years ago as my pod-mate in an incredible self-development group, Humans on the Verge. Turns out, we reached out for support at more or less the same time and had the opportunity to foster mutual trust and admiration as we discussed and tackled deeply personal and complex aspects of our lives. What an amazing way to experienc a person's true nature! And what I learned about Diana is that she's incredibly independent, hilarious and talented. As dedicated to storytelling as I am, as a video editor, she tells stories visually with heart and depth. As an awesome human, she has led a never-boring life and has the stories to prove it - and, thankfully she shares some with us! (Bonus - her cat Cashew makes a cameo!)
