About this listen

Shackled is about the history, present, and future of electronic monitoring technology in the carceral system and beyond. This five-episode series includes first-person accounts from people who have been forced to wear monitors, those who chose to wear monitors, and some who are trying to decide whether or not to be monitored. With perspectives from activities, academics, people working in the carceral system, and even the inventor of the very first electronic monitoring device, host Elise Thorburn unpacks the politics behind what is now being touted as ”an alternative to incarceration.” (Produced by Annie Corrigan.)Copyright 2021 All rights reserved.

Shackled, episode 5 A new, big prison with all the amenities doesn’t change the fact that it’s still a prison, and it’s still a prison when people are shackled to devices that restrict their movements and opportunities. Once you decide to see and confront the roots of incarceration in our society, you know that a technology could never do the work of fixing it.

Shackled, episode 4 One of the criticisms of electronic monitoring in the criminal justice system is that it widens the correctional net. More people are being put on monitors who in the past would not have been given any jail time. Their family and friends are then forced to become at-home jailers.

Shackled, episode 3 Much of the technology we’ve discussed in this podcast has its roots in logics of incarceration, but that’s never the whole story. While our systems and institutions are often monstrous, we ourselves are often not. Sometimes we create new technologies because we want to improve the human experience, and we surveil people because we care about them.
