About this listen

Shakespeare on Queer – the podcast that delves into the depths of William Shakespeare’s theatrical canon and his experimentation with gender and sexuality.

Through the voices of theatre makers, creatives and general Shakespeare Stans we interrogate a presentation of gender fluidity and sexual freedom against the modern structures and definitions of the present-day theatrical landscape in a way which, we like to think, is much more interesting (and accurate) than the old Billy S that you’ve read up on in your Highschool English Textbook.

This limited series was created and hosted by Ellen Constable with mentorship and support from the inimitable Alexandra-Spencer Jones.

All sound engineering magic is owed to Max Aspen, a real technical wizard.

A huge thank you to EM Williams, Philip Honeywell, Constance Des Marais and Laura Plumley for granting me their time and energy in appearing as guests in the episodes.

The episodes that form the series were recorded across 2023, we are actively looking to have more conversations with brilliant artists – if this sounds like you, or someone you know please get in touch!

Laura (she/her) is a queer actress and producer who trained at East 15 Acting School, before which she studied Classics at Oxford University. She has lots of experience performing and producing theatre, and is currently venturing into film, having just played the lead in her fourth short film. She has a great interest in adapting the classics, especially Shakespeare and Greek Tragedy, and loves how relevant and universal their themes can be.
