  • Pop Culture Archives: The Disappearance of Lauren Spierer (Part 1)
    Jun 3 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

On this special edition episode of Pop Culture Archives, we dig deep into the disappearance of Lauren Spierer, a vibrant 20-year-old Indiana University student who vanished from our hometown of Bloomington, Indiana, in the early morning hours of June 3, 2011 — exactly 15 years ago today. Known for her kindness, generosity, and deep Jewish faith, Lauren’s story has haunted Bloomington and beyond for over a decade.

Until recently, details available to the public pertaining to Lauren's case have been few and far between. In 2024, Shawn Cohen a journalist and one of the first on the case, published his book, College Girl, Missing bringing to light an abundance of information never released to the public and while what happened to Lauren remains one of true crime's biggest mysteries we now have a more precise timeline than ever of the hours leading up to her disappearance.

This part 1 episode unpacks the newly revealed timeline in the book, inconsistencies in the accounts of some of the key players from the night she disappeared, and the aftermath of the following morning as Lauren's friends and boyfriend frantically search for her.

Return next week for part two in which we cover the investigation, the Spierer family's lawsuit against the persons of interest, the many tips and theories that have emerged over the past 15 years, our own thoughts and opinions as to what could have happened, as well an exclusive interview with a friend who was an eyewitness in the case and saw Lauren the night she disappeared.

This is a case we lived in real time as young girls in Bloomington not much older than Lauren. We have thought and talked about it often year after year as Lauren remains missing and theories have developed. We want more than anything for her family to have answers and closure.

If you know anything regarding this case or any of the key players please call in tips to the Bloomington Police Department, Bloomington Indiana as this is very much still an ongoing investigation. The smallest detail could be the break in the case that brings Lauren home.

    May 27 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

It's pop culture queen of the month where we highlight a iconic woman owning the spotlight and crown her queen! This week, we're digging into Meg Stalter's journey from internet fame with the 'Hi, Gay!' video to a rising comedy star with roles in Cora Bora, Hacks, and Too Much. But first we're yapping about the Aldi cart exchange, Hollis's brush with death, and her suggestion as possibly cutting bangs again. Then it's on to the latest Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni updates, their unusual settlement agreement, our main takeaways, and what it could mean for the future of similar cases. Next we're diving into a much needed reality check and catching up on The Valley drama, Lindsay and Carl's igloo reconciliation, and Kyle's redemption arc (or the illusion of it at least.) Then it's time to get in the weeds with our Pop Cutlure Queen of the month, Meg Stalter! Hollis walks us through her internet comeuppance, her career trajectory that's catapulting her towards A List status, and her candid discussions of bisexuality and faith, exploring how it shapes her experience as a millennial woman navigating fame, confidence, and self-expression. Meg's just getting started and we can't wait to see what the future holds for her. As always we wrap it up with gripes about corporations and bad smells and grapes to good advertising and snack conveniences. See you in the weeds!

  • Pop Culture Archives: A Look at Cultural Appropriation, Stereotypes, and Consent in Havoc (Trigger Warning)
    May 20 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

It's pop culture archives and we're diving into the 2005 film Havoc to explore it's themes of cultural appropriation, rich white teen culture, gang representation, racial dynamics, sexual assault (TW), and the conversation around consent. There's a lot to unpack especially viewing the film through a post Me Too and Black Lives Matter lens. This movie attempted to convey important messages but misses the mark in so many ways. The film follows a group of wealthy white Los Angeles teenagers who spend their days imitating gang lifestyle and forming a crew they call the PLC. Fed up with their "boring" lives the female members of the PLC embark on a journey to find "real gangsters" and chaos ensues when they encounter the East LA 16th Street Crew. The film is layered and problematic in it's portrayal of cultural appropriation by the white teens and the "real" 16th Street Crew which was inspired by the 18th Street Gang, one of the largest and most notorious Latino Street gangs in Los Angeles history. The film also fumbles through a story of sexual assault which only serves to perpetuate stereotypes around gang life and criminal activity pertaining to minorities as well as blur the lines in the conversation around consent. The movie provides no resolution to any of the conflicts that arise and viewers are left wondering what is the message here? As always we wrap up the episode with gripes about inflation and keyboard warriors who can't get it right and grapes to fitness tech and analog listening. See you in the weeds!
