For the last episode in this series, IMarEST Fellow John Poulson sits down with Chris Law, Senior Vice President - Loss Control Specialist for Aon to understand the benefits of nuclear energy in the maritime space, both as a form of propulsion and as a source of offshore power production. Chris looks at the benefits of molten-salt reactors over conventional reactors, the safety implications, and some of the likely hurdles of the technology, both economic and social.

What are the realistic alternatives to marine diesel? Clean Shipping Lead at BMT and IMarEST member Dr Thomas Beard provides a detailed dive into the practicalities and obstacles of the 'big four' alternative fuels: Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), methanol, ammonia and hydrogen. Thomas analyses the challenges of retrofitting existing ships to accommodate new fuel storage tanks and compares this with risks such as energy densities and flashpoints, highlighting the crucial decisions that ship owners and managers face as the industry transitions to net zero.

Secretary General of the International Windship Association (IWSA) Gavin Allwright gives a brief overview of wind propulsion on ships. Gavin takes us through types of sail, current adoption among ships and a vision for the growth of the technology.

Dr Thomas Bayer, Lead Specialist for Fuel Cell Technology for Lloyd's Register, speaks with his colleague and IMarEST member Dr Muhammad Usman on his work with fuel cells and hydrogen technology. Thomas takes us through how fuel cells work and their current role in maritime propulsion, as well as a look at some of the main barriers to widespread adoption in the industry and his predictions for the future of the technology.
