• Open Borders Music and Arts Festival (Part II)
    May 14 2021

We welcome two very special people to the Sonic Milk Podcast this week. I got my start in the live audio and event world  with Mike Pfau and Adam Laiben working the Open Borders Music & Arts Festival in the summer of 2011.  Working the summer long festival and meeting these two humans changed my life. I am forever grateful for the path that was created and forged leading us to where we are now. Adam continues working as an editor and content creator for short films, documentaries, and feature length films. Mike continued his journey as a key contributor to the creative juggernaut that is GoPro. Chances are, if you have seen a film produced by GoPro in the last 8 years, he has had a major hand in it.

We discuss DIY everything and how that mentality brought about the Open Borders Festival. From the conception of the idea, the locations backstory, and what these two creative people have worked on since.

In the second part of this conversation about Open Borders, we discussed operational bandwidth, potential roadblocks to the festival's success, personal triumphs, takeaways, and the future.  It is a wild ride and I can't be more proud to share their stories with all of you.

To See what Mike Pfau and Adam Laiben created during a show we put on together in 2012:

    Chronology Presents and Technicolor Zebra

I sat down with Singer/Guitarist of San Luis Obispo based band, The Bogeys. We had fun. Fun is good.

This was a fun jaunt into the minds of two central coast idiots.  There was coffee talk, stupid stuff, cool stuff, and even a little emo stuff. Amidst all the stuff...it always came back to music and community. There will be more to come from AJ in upcoming Pods!

Check out The Bogeys on instagram and their website for more info on the band and upcoming shows.

  • Zack Greenwald (Part II)
    Apr 2 2021

On Episode 4 (Part II) of the Sonic Milk Podcast, I traveled to Cambria, California to chat with producer/songwriter Zack Greenwald. We setup on his front porch overlooking the hills and trees hugging the Pacific Coast Highway.  The almost 3 hour conversation has been been edited and broken into two parts.

We sat down and talked about his life being in a band for almost 10 years and starting a new life here as a producer for artists up and down the california coast.  He talks about growing up in Westlake Village, CA (just north of Los Angeles) and the music that inspired him to pursue music as a founding member of Givers and Takers. He and I also went pretty deep about life and being a creative person in  the era of COVID.  Words can't express how much I admire and respect Zack and this conversation I feel will bring the listeners a little bit closer to who we are and what we want to do creatively as human beings and producers of sound.

On episode 3 of the Sonic Milk pod, I sit down with Robert and Richard of The Vacant Shapes.
I have known and worked with this band over the last 6 years and I can't be more proud of who they've become. We talk about the DIY/DIT spirit and what makes the central coast so special. From the band's formation to their evolution  during COVID, The Vacant Shapes discuss their creative process and wisdom for younger bands wanting to create during these times.

It was an honor listening to my friends speak about being a band in this new age. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as well.

On Episode 2 of The Sonic Milk Podcast, we sit down with San Luis Obispo based singer/songwriter, Cassi Nichols. She talks about coming to Los Angeles from the suburbs of Detroit to work in Hollywood and finding her voice as a song writer after moving to the central coast years later. We go on and off topics in the best way while always reeling it back to our shared love of music and community. It was an absolute blast having her on as a guest.

Give her a follow on her Instagram  page and website for details about upcoming releases and shows!!

Santa Barbara based singer/songwriter, Hilary Watson, sits down with us in her home as we share a conversation about life in the time  of Covid.

We discussed meditation, the importance of a healthy local music community, life as a creative during quarantine, and her favorite Beatles songs. It was a pleasure talking shop and audio quality in todays digital age and the importance of holding on to the art of listening to records on vinyl.  What a way to kick off the Sonic Milk Podcast.
