  • Safety Training
    Dec 8 2024

Join your host Emilee Shuler, along with co-host Dusty Brown, as we interview Safety Training, an up and coming Gulf Coast band meeting your "South Alabama sad songs" needs! With a wide range of influences from death metal to midwestern emo all the way to John Mayer (may we suggest playing a drinking game where you drink every time one of us mentions "John Mayer"), Safety Training is a conglomeration of talented musicians that come together to create music that is beautiful and thought-provoking, but also just heavy enough. Safety Training consists of Nick Rhodes (vocals, guitar), Mike Martinez (guitar), Ben White (bass), and Dustin Harris (drums) - and it all started with a Bowflex! They currently have 2 singles out on all major streaming platforms - "Inside My Mind" and "Just Breathing," both of which they perform at the end of this episode. Make sure to follow them on social media and your favorite streaming app! These guys are going places.

  • The man, the myth, the legend...Corky Hughes
    Nov 15 2024

Mobile, Alabama's own humble guitar legend Corky Hughes has been the guitarist in Grayson Capps' band for many years now, but he has had a very prolific career in music. In this episode, we get to hear Corky's story like never before. Join me on the journey and find out about his upbringing and how his love and talent for music developed, details of his impressive career including some details from touring with Black Oak Arkansas, some of his favorite music to listen to, and more! During the music portion, Corky blesses us with some beautiful guitar renditions of songs such as these: "I Can Sing A Rainbow," originally written as a children's nursery rhyme by Arthur Hamilton and used in the film Pete Kelly's Blues (1955), performed by Peggy Lee, but it took on a new life and has been covered by many artists over the decades; "Hushabye Mountain," which is a ballad written by Robert and Richard Sherman that is best known from the classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in which Dick Van Dyke's character sings it as a lullaby to his children...it has also been covered by many incredible artists (most notably to ME is David Gilmour of Pink Floyd); and "Adventures of Brer Rabbit and Tar Baby" written by Roy Buchanan as part of the 1946 Disney classic, Song of the South based on the Uncle Remus stories compiled by Joel Chandler Harris.

Check out the new album released by Grayson Capps in October 2024, Heartbreak, Misery & Death and then go down a rabbit hole to hear Corky's beautiful playing throughout the years!
