This episode of Souvni on the Mike dives into the silence and shock that followed Haiti’s independence. Souvni and Valentin guide listeners through the emotional aftermath of victory, when the enslaved woke to a world without the morning bell, without commands, without fear. The show explores how freedom felt like both breath and fire, a new rhythm of life beginning after centuries of bondage. It paints the first sunrise of liberty through the eyes of elders rebuilding, youth discovering identity, and women restoring life with care, love, and the sacred act of making soup joumou.

The La Famille Pòt skit brings comic relief to this history. Ovila returns home bloodied from a hilarious market battle for the last squash, determined to honor tradition by cooking soup joumou for her family. When they realize there’s no oxtail, she grabs her purse and declares she will fight again. The family sighs, “Here we go again,” turning the struggle for ingredients into a modern echo of the fight for freedom itself.

  • A Day in the Life of Jean-Jacques Dessalines

In Week 3 of our Summer 2026 series, Under the Haitian Skin, we step beyond the history books and into the lived reality of Jean‑Jacques Dessalines, not the myth, not the propaganda, but the man.

This episode takes listeners through a single day in Dessalines’ life, revealing the emotional truth behind the figure the world thinks it knows. We explore how a child born in chains became the architect of Haiti’s independence, and how the world used his name as a lens to judge an entire nation.

Through a powerful conversation between Souvni and Valentin, we uncover the psychological scars Dessalines carried from enslavement, the betrayals that shaped his distrust of colonial powers, the propaganda that turned a liberator into a villain in foreign eyes, the tenderness and grounding he found through Marie‑Claire Heureuse, and the survival logic behind his leadership, a logic born from brutality, not cruelty

And as always, we close with a new episode of La Famille Pòt, where Tika paints Dessalines with three faces, a humorous, heartfelt moment that reveals a deeper truth: a man who lived through fire cannot have just one face.

This week’s episode is not just history. It is an invitation to understand how the world sees Haiti through Dessalines, and how we, as Haitians, can reclaim the narrative.

  • The Sins of Haiti - Punished for Freedom (Part 2)
    Jun 20 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

In Part 2 of this powerful series, Souvni digs deeper into Haiti’s past to expose the true cost of freedom, not the cost Haitians chose, but the cost the world forced upon them. After the triumph of 1804, no nation congratulated Haiti; instead, they punished it. They isolated the new Black republic, imposed embargoes, blocked trade, and launched diplomatic schemes designed to break a nation that dared to stand tall. This episode traces how France demanded reparations for losing enslaved people, how the United States invaded, seized Haiti’s gold, and installed an occupation that did not seek to understand Haitian culture, religion, and humanity. They mocked Haitian traditions and pushed their ideology while exploiting Haitian labor and resources. And when they were done, they spread lies portraying Haiti as cursed and disorganized, hiding their own role in the damage. Through sharp dialogue, humor, and historical truth, Souvni and Valentin dismantle the myths and reveal the deeper story: Haiti wasn’t punished for failure, it was punished for freedom.

And, in the comedic yet cutting skit, La Famille Pòt prepares a grand Independence Day celebration and invites nations from around the world. But one by one, the powerful countries decline, or pretend Haiti doesn’t exist. Thomas Jefferson “can’t find Haiti on his globe,” France stays silent, and others hide behind excuses. Through laughter and satire, the family exposes the hypocrisy of nations that feared a free Black republic. They celebrate anyway, with good Haitian foods, and the unshakeable truth of Haitian freedom.
