    Captain’s Log — Stardate 2344.46

    USS Hyperion, NCC‑1625‑B

    Captain Jorn Thoris commanding,

Legate Damarak has seized Ensign Cau'Dill and departed the system at high warp. His justification was a fabricated insult to Cardassian honor—transparent, deliberate, and executed with military precision. Whatever goodwill Starfleet hoped to cultivate has evaporated in the space of a single conversation.

Our attempts to re‑establish communication have been ignored. The Cardassian vessels fired without provocation, and their withdrawal was too coordinated to be anything but premeditated. This was not a diplomatic misunderstanding. It was a message.

Starfleet Command has been notified. Their initial response urges restraint until the political situation can be assessed. I understand their caution… but every instinct I possess tells me the ensign is in immediate danger.I will await further orders, but I cannot ignore the reality before me. One of my officers has been taken. And I will not allow him to vanish into Cardassian hands.

    Captain's Personal Log, Supplemental

Starfleet Command has issued a direct order: maintain position, await diplomatic clarification, and do not pursue the Cardassian vessel.

Their reasoning is sound—on paper. A single misstep here could unravel the fragile relationship we’ve only just begun to build with the Union. But I cannot ignore what I know. Legate Damarak, abducted one of my officers, and fled toward Bajor—occupied territory where Federation law holds no sway. If Ensign Cau'Dill is taken into one of their detention centers, his chances of survival diminish by the hour.

I have reviewed the order three times. I have considered every angle, every consequence. I understand what Starfleet expects of me.But I also understand my duty to my crew.If I remain here, I condemn that young man to whatever fate Damarak has prepared for him. And that… I cannot accept.I will give Command one final opportunity to revise their directive. If they do not……then I will act according to my conscience.

    End log.

    Captain’s Log — Stardate 2344.46

    USS Hyperion, NCC‑1625‑B

    Captain Jorn Thoris commanding,

There is a saying from the ice plains of Lor’vel: ‘When two storms meet, the wise listen for the shape of the wind.’ Today, the Hyperion sails into such a meeting.
By Admiral Jameson’s order, we set course for Starbase 24 to join the Federation delegation in formalizing relations with the Cardassian Union. Twenty years have passed since first contact — twenty years of brittle frost between us, never fully thawed, never fully broken. Now Ambassador Sarek leads the effort to carve a path through that frozen terrain. If any mind can find the stillness beneath the storm, it is his.

We are to meet Legate Demarak and his cadre of ambassadors. Cardassians speak warmly, but their warmth is like a desert wind — it dries the air, but it does not melt the ice. My antennae have been angled toward every whisper of this mission; they read tension the way a seafarer reads currents. Yet beneath that tension, I sense possibility. Even the coldest glacier shifts, given time and pressure.

The Stargazer, Intrepid, and Excalibur hold station around the starbase, their silhouettes like sentinels carved against the void. A reminder that diplomacy is strongest when backed by steady hands, not drawn blades.
We have also welcomed a new complement of ensigns aboard — fresh from the Academy, eyes bright as the auroras over Andor. They carry the restless energy of untested steel. I intend for them to witness the conference. Let them see that Starfleet’s honor is not measured only in battle, but in the courage to speak, to listen, and to trust when trust feels perilous.

If the winds favor us, this may be the day the Federation and the Cardassian Union step out of their long winter and into something new. I hold that hope close — not as naïveté, but as a blade kept sharp for the right moment.

    Thoris out.”
