About this listen
When punk music was on the rise in the mid to late 1970s, its roots in 50s and 60s rock and pop were often masked by noisy production and rebellious energy. But when two iconic New York City punk bands (the Ramones and the Cramps) covered a novelty surf-rock hit from 1963, punk's lineage became much clearer, and showed that this new style of music may not be as different from the previous generation's as you might think.
