  • PETER VAUDRY - Kindness Is Sault Ste. Marie
    Feb 19 2026

Peter Vaudry has a published book, ‘Kindness is Sault Ste. Marie’. Peter found that he often thought about the many kindnesses he has experienced over his lifetime. He realized and appreciated the huge role those acts of kindness played in his life. He chose the title, “Kindness is Sault Ste. Marie” to capture all of that in its totality.

When asked about his reasons for writing ‘Kindness is Sault Ste. Marie’, Peter advised that he was concerned about the growing frequency of public and online displays of angry and resentment-laden behaviour. The book encourages people to be proactive about protecting the community from the corrosive potential of such behaviour. Peter believes that we should all be able to express our opinions but we can do so in a kind and respectful way.

“Kindness is Sault Ste. Marie” is an important read for today’s world.

    Peter’s Thoughts:

I write that “Kindness Is Sault Ste. Marie” but it is my experience that the Sault Ste. Marie way is to choose to be kind.

In most of the instances I write about, including in my youth, it was a reflexive choice that the people of the Sault made.

I was reading again a copy of “Our Daily Bread” article from Nov. 2024 by Michael E. Wittmer, PhD. Professor of Systematic Theology at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary, in which he writes, “We are who we’ve chosen to become”.

The people of the Sault have always chosen to be kind.

I have been concerned about the lack of civility in our society for a while. I think the Sault – with its Legacy of KINDNESS – can be the example of civility based on our history of KINDNESS.

I worry in today’s wired world that we may lose the kindness due to today’s current apathy and indifference which is one of the main reasons why I wrote the book.

Let’s reinforce who and what we are and keep it strong.

  • DR. FRANK SARLO - The Thinking Chair
    Feb 19 2026

‘The Thinking Chair’ is a departure from his previous books, ones where Frank featured different, often dynamic Sault cultural histories, human migration stories, and hockey world legacies. In his new offering, Frank draws upon his long Sault community building experience, successful 40 year legal career, and later in life doctoral studies (PhD, Community Organizations, Bristol University, UK). ‘The Thinking Chair’ provides a fine blueprint for every community organization, institution, or non-profit enterprise seeking to achieve positive change and bringing people together, united in a common cause.

For more than forty years, Dr. Frank S. Sarlo was a practicing lawyer acting on behalf of numerous institutions, industries, businesses and government agencies. Much of his time was spent sitting on federal, provincial and local boards and agencies as well as being involved, at all levels, in community projects in sports, the arts, political campaigns, and fund raisers. Because he was interested in examining examples of successful community mobilizations, Frank completed his doctoral thesis to determine the influences and processes that assist in leading to successful community mobilization. In addition, he had the privilege to take a leadership role in a number of successful community mobilizations that required the organization and recruitment of community assets to meet a specific challenge or goal.

“Because of my love and appreciation for Sault Ste. Marie and its people, my books all deal with their spirit and soul of one kind or another.” – Frank Sarlo

  • MAKAYLA WEBKAMIGAD - For My Nieces
    Oct 16 2025

Makayla Webkamigad was commissioned in 2023 to write for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.

“This poem is very special to me and is my first published piece.

I wrote this, as a love letter to my nieces, being truthful about our family, but also being gentle, in the important role of an auntie.

Nowadays there are a lot of negative connotations behind that word, Auntie.

I wanted to use it in the traditional way, the way I was taught. A crucial role in our family system as indigenous people. Sharing love, knowledge and teachings.

Thankful to my family, for the work they did, for the knowledge passed onto me so that I hold as much information as I can about my family history, and our history as Anishinaabe people. My grandparents who all attended residential school, my parents who both attended day schools, and the legacy of resiliency I was born into. A story that a lot of us share, a story so common for our families. All across turtle island.

Miigwech to TRC for entrusting me to continue my family’s work.

To all the nieces and nephews who have an auntie or uncle that loves and supports them in everything. The ones who are there, consistently.”
