A cold October night in 1943. Luna is posted to a field hospital near Stillwater Crossing, a small town in eastern Tennessee, when a boy of about twelve is brought in from the river. He is soaked, shivering, and mute — but his eyes are fixed on something only he can see. He carries a rusted military-issue canteen, dented and old, and in his pocket a folded photograph of a woman who looks just like Luna. The boy says nothing for hours, but when the moon rises, he begins to whisper a name — a name that matches the inscription on a grave behind the old bridge. Luna follows him into the fog that night, and what she finds under the bridge is not a body, not a ghost, but something that has been waiting for a very long time. This is a story about recognition, about the debts we carry across years, and about the cold that settles in bones that never got to rest.
