• TCF Ep. 659 - Jeffery Saddoris & Ibarionex Perello
    May 14 2026

A year after the Eaton Fire in Altadena upended our lives, I found myself sitting down with photographer, writer, and educator Jeffery Saddoris for a conversation that was less about photography and more about what happens when life forces you to reconsider where—and how—you want to live. Recorded in February, just before our move to Bordeaux, France, this episode reflects on the long emotional aftermath of loss, displacement, and uncertainty, as well as the difficult decisions that followed in the wake of the fire.

What emerged from our conversation was not simply a discussion about relocation or starting over abroad. It became an honest reflection on identity, community, work, and the search for stability after a period of profound disruption. We talk about the realities of rebuilding, the emotional weight of leaving Southern California, and the hope that comes with embracing change, even when it arrives unexpectedly. For those who have experienced upheaval in their own lives, this conversation may feel especially familiar—a reminder that sometimes the path forward only becomes visible once everything familiar has been stripped away.

  • TCF Ep. 658 - Michael Robinson Chávez
    Apr 29 2026

When Michael Robinson Chávez first traveled to Peru with a camera in hand, he couldn't have known it would mark the beginning of a lifelong relationship with photography—and with the country that would become central to his understanding of himself. A native Californian and the son of a Peruvian mother, Chávez has spent decades building a distinguished career as a visual journalist, photographing stories across the globe with a rare combination of rigor, empathy, and clarity. Whether covering war, political upheaval, environmental crisis, or everyday life, his photographs are rooted in a deep respect for the people in front of his lens and a commitment to revealing the emotional truth within complex stories.

That same depth of feeling runs through Mestizo, his long-term project on Peru and the subject of our conversation this week. Made over decades, the work is both a portrait of a country shaped by layers of history, culture, and contradiction, and a personal reckoning with heritage, belonging, and identity. These photographs do more than document place—they reflect an ongoing search for connection, a way of understanding how the mixed inheritance of Peru has also shaped the way Chávez sees the world and himself. The result is a body of work that feels both intimate and expansive, deeply personal yet resonant far beyond the boundaries of autobiography. Mestizo will be released as a monograph in early 2026 by Eyeshot.

  • TCF Ep. 657 - Deborah Ory & Ken Browar
    Apr 7 2026

When photographers Ken Browar and Deborah Ory first began collaborating on what would become NYC Dance Project, they set out to create portraits that could honor the athleticism, artistry, and emotional force of dance. Their work has since become synonymous with a style of portraiture that is both elegant and explosive—capturing dancers in motion with a precision that reveals not only physical mastery, but also vulnerability, discipline, and grace. Over the years, their lens has been turned toward some of the world's most accomplished performers, translating movement into still images that pulse with life.

That vision continues in their new book, Martha Graham Dance Company at 100, which celebrates one of the most influential institutions in modern dance. Through striking portraits and carefully sequenced images, the book honors the legacy of Martha Graham's groundbreaking choreography while foregrounding the contemporary artists who continue to embody and reinterpret that tradition. Rather than simply documenting performance, Browar and Ory create photographs that feel sculptural, theatrical, and deeply human—offering a tribute not only to dance, but to the enduring power of a company that helped redefine what modern movement could be.

  • TCF Ep. 656 - Stephanie Pommez
    Mar 16 2026
When photographer Stephanie Pommez began documenting the lives of traditional midwives in the Amazon, she was drawn by a desire to understand how communities shape meaning through ritual, labor, and shared belief. Over several years, she traveled through river-dweller communities, photographing women who serve not only as caretakers and healers, but as guardians of local culture. What began as a documentary exploration of daily life gradually opened onto something more expansive—an encounter with the oral traditions and myths that run alongside the visible world. That long engagement evolved into The Enchanted Ones, a lyrical and haunting project inspired by the stories of the encantados—mythical shapeshifting beings said to inhabit the rivers and forests of the Amazon. Shot in 35mm black and white, the book moves beyond conventional documentary, embracing ambiguity, atmosphere, and the porous boundary between reality and imagination. Rather than illustrating folklore from a distance, Pommez creates a visual meditation on a culture where myth and daily life are inseparable. The result is a deeply evocative tribute to the Ribeirinho communities and the invisible threads of story, memory, and belief that connect them. • TCF Ep. 655 - Tawyny Chatmon
    Feb 25 2026
When photographer Tawny Chatmon creates a portrait, she is doing more than arranging light and subject—she is reconstructing history. Drawing from classical European painting traditions while centering contemporary Black subjects, her work reclaims visual space that has long excluded them. Through layered textures, gold leaf, and painterly surfaces, Tawny creates images that feel both timeless and urgently present. Her portraits challenge the conventions of representation, placing children and families within compositions that evoke Renaissance and Baroque aesthetics while subverting their historical omissions. Rather than treating her subjects as symbols, she honors their individuality, dignity, and complexity. The result is work that feels intimate yet monumental—a visual meditation on legacy, visibility, and the power of self-definition. • TCF Ep. 654 - Jamey Price
    Feb 18 2026
When photographer Jamey Price first turned his lens toward motorsports, he wasn't simply chasing speed—he was chasing feeling. The roar of engines, the blur of motion, the choreography of pit crews and drivers—all of it became raw material for a visual language that balances technical precision with emotional intensity. His photographs don't just freeze high-performance machines; they capture the atmosphere, tension, and spectacle that define global racing culture. That pursuit culminates in his new book, Racing Unfiltered, a signed and numbered edition that brings readers closer to the visceral reality of professional racing. Created entirely with branded disposable cameras, the images possess a raw, unpredictable character—grainy, imperfect, and immediate—offering a distinctive look far removed from the polished precision of modern digital capture. Rather than presenting only carefully crafted highlight moments, the work embraces spontaneity and constraint, revealing the grit behind the glamour: the preparation, exhaustion, unpredictability, and human vulnerability embedded within elite competition. The result is an immersive and refreshingly unfiltered study of motion, risk, and ambition. • TCF Ep. 653 - Danielle L. and Caroline Goldstein
    Feb 4 2026
When photographer Danielle L. Goldstein and editor–writer Caroline Goldstein came together to create Transience, the result was a collaboration rooted in restraint, trust, and attentiveness. The book occupies the in-between—those fleeting, unresolved moments that resist easy interpretation. Danielle's photographs do not insist on meaning; instead, they invite the viewer into a space of quiet observation, where tenderness and uncertainty are allowed to coexist. Caroline Goldstein's editorial sequencing and text deepen that experience without attempting to fix it in place. Her words don't explain the images so much as they echo them, creating room for resonance rather than resolution. Together, image and text form a subtle meditation on impermanence—on how time moves through bodies, relationships, and places, leaving behind traces that are felt more than seen. Transience is a reminder that photography doesn't need to be declarative to be powerful; sometimes its greatest strength lies in suggestion, subtlety, and trust in the viewer. Resources: Danielle L. • TCF Ep. 652 - Amani Willett
    Jan 13 2026

When photographer Amani Willett turns his attention to American life, he does so with a quiet precision that reveals both its poetry and its contradictions. Working primarily in black and white, Amani's photographs explore themes of history, memory, race, and belonging—often focusing on overlooked spaces and moments that carry deep cultural resonance. His work invites viewers to slow down and consider how the past lingers in the present, shaping both personal and collective identity.

That approach has defined a career rooted in long-term observation and thoughtful storytelling. Whether photographing landscapes marked by historical trauma or everyday scenes charged with social meaning, Amani resists easy narratives. Instead, he creates photographs that ask questions rather than offer answers—encouraging reflection on what it means to inhabit America now, and how photography can serve as a tool for inquiry, witness, and understanding.
