  • The Aus Open Event Show with Karen Clydesdale
    May 21 2022
Welcome to this new series of the Event Show we are lucky to speak with leaders in the world of major events, as we enter an exciting window of opportunity across our industry. The purpose of the show is to give a voice to our industry, to hear from influential leaders as to how they are going about their work, and so we can take things away and apply it in our world.

So in this chat, I'm joined by a popular figure in our industry, who has been heavily involved in an event most of us will know.

Karen Clydesdale is 'Head of Customer Experience and Customer Relationship Management' at Tennis Australia, leading a team that has been producing amazing things at the Australian Open, and also across the many events and experiences that they provide.

This is an extremely interesting chat as Karen has been leading the way with many new ways of working, how experiences are designed and delivered, and how to keep evolving what they do.

We cover the importance of 'the experience', and having a very strong vision, strategic pillars and guiding principles to guide what you are focusing on.

We also talk about the ongoing evolution of the Aus Open, in providing experiences for different groups of people, the customers, the fans/patrons, the players, participants, and partners, and also the workforce - and why that is important.

We even touch on all the levels of value, for before, during and after an event, with the critical physical and digital interactions.

We also learn how Karen's team measure progress and applies the insights from these measures.

We also hear some of Karen's valuable personal experiences, including some really practical and important tips and tricks we can all use!

So there is so much to take away from this chat, from a strategic level, through to the day-to-day ways of working.

Karen has a wealth of experience and is using that to make a real difference in the experiences she provides.

We do hope you enjoy the Show, and as always please drop me a line at andrew@andrewoloughlin.com to see if I can help you with the design or redesign of your event experiences, or in developing the strategy that will make your event, the most valuable experience it can be, for your audiences, and for you.

But for now please enjoy this special show, with the amazing Karen Clydesdale from Tennis Australia…

  • The Event Show - the Comeback Special
    Apr 7 2022

Welcome to this special Event Show which is a bit of a comeback special, almost two years to the day that we did a coronavirus special to support each other as our industry was shut down, in those weeks that the likes in the Grand Prix were cancelled, today the Grand Prix is back stronger than ever, as our many events across Australia.

But it hasn't all been smooth sailing, and while the opportunities are back, there are as always some scenarios to be particularly conscious of, and be thinking about. And as I was recently asked by our friends and colleagues in New Zealand to share our experiences as events remerged in Australia, so that our Kiwi friends, and those around Australia and other parts of the world might benefit from some of the observations we've seen and have experiences over the past couple of months - and perhaps to give you the benefit of foresight, we wanted to share what we've seen occur, and what may be coming your way.

So in this chat I'm joined by Geordie Miles from Spark Event Group, Georgie Stayches from Fetching Events and Communications, and Ben Muldoon from Race Roster, and around 100 guests, who all gave us their interesting and diverse perspectives on what they've seen, and what we might all be looking out for.

I do hope you enjoy the Show, and can take something away to use in your work, and as always please drop me a line at andrew@andrewoloughlin.com if I can help you with the design or relaunch of your event experiences, or in developing the event strategy to make your come back, the best comeback it can be.

  • The parkrun journey - an influential participant experience with Tim Oberg
    Jun 4 2021

I'm really pleased to be able to share this follow up discussion that I had with Tim Oberg, a previous Event Show guest and the man who brought what has become a global success story, parkrun, to this part of the world.

This is a great opportunity to understand the experience that parkrun provides, and how it goes about providing it.

A participant experience which ultimately has had an immense influence on many people, influencing more people to sign up and show up again, and again, week after week until they become evangelists for parkrun, and start to bring others people with them - all of which has been a big part of the success of parkrun.

So, I do hope you can follow these steps on a parkrunners journey and apply them to your experiences.

I hope you can walk away with some brilliant tips or thought-providing thought starters... as to how we can design EVEN MORE influential experiences within our events (and perhaps how you can use this in your life!).

  • The Event Show Presents: The Sport Experience Show with Mat Johnson
    Apr 30 2021

Welcome to the Sport Experience show - where we are speaking with world-leading experts in the world of sport and active experiences, sharing their ideas and giving you some inspiration and meaningful info to walk away with and use in your work.

This new series is exploring the influence of the experiences we provide, as I think we all agree that the experiences we provide have a major influence on people, and ultimately determine whether we are successful in our work.

And so… I am super excited to share this discussion I had with... Mat Johnson, who is without doubt one of the leading thinkers I have had the pleasure of working with, and pioneered the design and oversaw the delivery of some of the most influential global 'live experience' campaigns in recent times.

Now based in the US, Mat spent 20 or so years leading the development of NIKE events and active experiences, driving amazing experiences and value for their consumers, and also the brand behind them, MJ has a lot for us to learn from.

It was really fascinating to unpack what went on, and why he approaches the work with the passion that he does. And I've got to say, this a really valuable chat on so many levels… so, sooo much to take away from this show... giving us all something important to things think about. I do hope you enjoy this chat with MJ!

And if you want to reach out as you design - or redesign and rebuild your fan or participant experiences, I'd love to hear what your creating. Just drop me a line at andrew @ experiencedesign.global or check out sportexperiencedesign.com + sportexperiencedesign.com/podcast
