  • Ballet culture and body image in recreational dance training with Rebekah Wall
    Jun 21 2024

Rebekah is a dance teacher and performer, recently graduated from Edge Hill University. In today's episode we discuss Rebekah's chapter Ballet culture and body image in recreational dance training which takes an auto-ethnographic approach to exploring this through Rebekah's own journal entries. At times, quite raw and honest about her experiences in the studio relating to body image, Rebekah's chapter provides an insight into an inner dialogue that peers and teachers may not be aware of, and hopefully through these conversations and writings, can become more aware of the experiences going on in the room, and how to support the dancer effectively.

You can read Rebekah's chapter in The 'Female' Dancer: a soma-scientific approach.

    Jun 7 2024
In this episode we are joined by Amelia Millward and Dr James Brouner to discuss the experiences of bodies with breasts from both an experiential and a biomechanical standpoint. This conversation touches on the sexualisation of the female body in dance, personal experiences of dancers in the studio as well as the lack of research in this area, particularly in relation to the physiological and biomechanical impact. We hope that opening these discussions can break down taboos around topics such as this in dance. Amelia and James' chapter - Embodied experiences of bodies with breasts can be found in The 'Female' Dancer: a soma-scientific approach.
