Meet Jen & Troy.
Jen was raised in the 70s & 80s in a Democrat family who had a proud and dynamic legacy in advocacy and politics. She defended her parents' vote for Jimmy Carter at a church sleep over & her vote for Bill Clinton to fellow BYU students, even worked on Capitol Hill.…but by the late 1990s Jen realized the party she loved wasn’t what it seemed. Fast forward to 2025, Jen’s virtues and viewpoints remain the same but feels the Democrat Party has left her.
Troy grew up in the 2000s when politics became vitriol, vicious and divisive almost overnight. Led by his empathy and influenced by friends, family and social media to dislike Trump and vote Democrat, Troy slowly and hesitantly realized his values more aligned with Republicans. While he passionately supports everyone’s right to believe and vote as they see fit, Troy hesitates no more and has found his voice to speak out on how he believes and votes.
In this episode we talk about:
1) What drew Jen & Troy to the left.
-Family tradition & social pressure
-Emphasis on agency and compassion
-Democrats were the party of choice and helping people
2) What changed and drew them to the right.
Jen:
-Inefficiency of government programs & Thomas Sowell
-Democrats' obsession with saving women when women don’t need to be saved
-Democrat support of partial-birth abortion
-Aaand the Sleaze Ball of the 90s…and her party’s response
Troy:
-Got married, had kids, did some research
-Not falling for the victim mentality thanks to being raised by a stud of a dad
-Abortion….life shouldn't be treated flippantly
3) Suggestions for members on the political RIGHT on interacting with members of the church on the political LEFT.
-Stop telling them they're bad people
-Understand they are voting the way they truly think is best for individuals and our nation, so don’t demonize their motives
-Don’t be afraid of tough conversations
-Try to find common ground, don’t be afraid to speak your mind and state facts respectfully and allow them the same
4) Closing statements to our fellow Saints on the LEFT.
Jen:
-I understand your heart and intentions; I’ve had those my entire life
-Our nation was set up to ensure freedom of choice, but we cannot separate the consequences of those choices and government cannot solve every problem, our nation cannot survive that
-I grew up believing in equality…for all and the tactics on the Left to achieve this is creating a backlash
-We cannot compel everyone to believe in the same thing
-Please listen and respect your fellow Americans, they’re not less moral than you and it’s ok to think differently
Troy:
-I understand your love and empathy for others but there is a fine line to letting that empathy be abused
-Be open to having tough conversations with those on the Right to understand our motive; we are not racist or unempathetic
-In fact, the Right is more nuanced than what you’re being told
