A talking cat? That shouldn't be so very challenging. Surely ..

In one of Saki's finest stories the humour and the gentle digs at Edwardian society are very evident.

One of Edgar Allan Poe's finest. Certainly one of his best known, if not best loved, short stories. It is a challenge to us to keep a clear conscience .. and a warning as to what befalls us if we cannot. Warning: horror and gory detail; what else should we expect from EAP?

  • The Story Of An Hour - a short story, by Kate Chopin

'The Story of an Hour' is a short story written by Kate Chopin on April 19, 1894. It was originally published in Vogue on December 6, 1894, as "The Dream of an Hour". It was later reprinted in St. Louis Life on January 5, 1895, as "The Story of an Hour".

The title of the short story refers to the time elapsed between the moments at which the protagonist, Louise Mallard, hears that her husband, Brently Mallard, is dead, and then discovers that he is alive after all. Featuring a female protagonist who feels liberation and ponders her identity at the news of her husband's death, "The Story of an Hour" was controversial by American standards in the 1890s. How to pick the Derby winner. One house guest may have the answer.

(Culinary note: it was often the fashion, at least in the UK, to serve whitebait with a slice or two of buttered brown bread.)

Is there a better way to write Christmas 'Thank You' letters? Egbert thinks so. Janetta needs convincing. Saki in delightfully inventive mode.
