  • The Hot Pepper Show w/ Pepper Thomas Interviewing Eric Roberson
    Nov 26 2024

Eric Roberson: The Pioneer of Independent R&B/Soul

Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer, and Howard University alum Eric Roberson is a trailblazer in the world of independent music. Widely recognized as a pioneer of the independent R&B/Soul movement, Eric has carved a remarkable career outside the confines of major labels and mainstream trends. With over two decades of creating what he calls “Honest Music,” Eric has built an impressive legacy, both as a solo artist and as a songwriter and producer for iconic artists like Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Vivian Green, and Dwele.

Eric’s commitment to independence has allowed him unparalleled artistic freedom, resulting in 13 solo albums and sold-out tours across the country. His ability to connect deeply with audiences has cemented his reputation as one of the most authentic voices in contemporary music.

A Career Built on Passion and Perseverance

Eric credits his success to his willingness to embrace the challenges of going against the grain. He reflects, “I was more than willing to take less to enjoy my passion. I was fortunate to be rewarded with a career…a career that I never dreamed of.”

In June 2021, Eric released the heartfelt single “Lessons”—a song inspired by his wife Shawn and the lessons learned through life’s setbacks and blessings. Eric shared, “There’s a reason for setbacks, for failure, for all of it. There’s a lesson in being patient and trusting the process.”

During the pandemic in 2020, Eric channeled his creativity into “Hear from Here”, an album crafted in just four weeks. Designed as an “act of service” to his fans, the ten-song project offered hope, love, and inspiration during a challenging time.

    Teaching and Engaging with Fans

Eric’s dedication to nurturing talent led to his role as a professor at Berklee College of Music in 2019. He views teaching as an extension of his artistry, saying, “At all times we are teachers and students. I not only love teaching the students but learning from them as well.”

Through initiatives like “The Process”, Eric invites fans into his creative journey, offering a rare glimpse into the making of his music. He believes this interactive experience helps preserve the cultural richness of music appreciation.

    Recognition and Awards

Eric’s accolades include Grammy nominations in 2010 and 2011 for “Best Urban/Alternative Performance,” a BETJ Virtual Award for “Underground Artist of the Year” in 2008, and the distinction of being the first independent artist nominated for a BET Award in 2007.

As DJ Jazzy Jeff eloquently stated, “My brother Eric Roberson is one of the greatest singer/songwriters of our time.”

Eric Roberson continues to redefine the boundaries of artistry, inspiring fans and musicians alike with his dedication to authenticity and innovation.
