August 1998. Luna rides the night ferry across the Keweenaw Waterway to Copper Harbor, a town that vanishes from the map each winter. She is looking for a woman named Edith who vanished from a moored boat ten years ago, leaving a single cassette tape behind. The tape plays the sound of Lake Superior breathing—not water, but something deeper. Luna finds the boat still at its slip, the tape still in the deck, and hears what Edith heard: a low, repeating pulse from the bottom of the lake. Not a heartbeat. The ferry captain says nothing. The lighthouse beam passes. And then the ferry arrives, and Luna gets off, and she does not look back at the water. She can still feel that pulse in her teeth.
