It was the winter of 2009, and the snow came early that year—heavy, wet, and silent. Margo's nearest neighbor was three miles down the mountain. She didn't mind the isolation. She had her dogs, her wood stove, and the mail came three times a week. But one night in December, she heard footsteps on her porch at 2:00 AM. There were no tire tracks in the driveway. No footprints leading away from the house. Just the sound of someone standing there, breathing. And then the knocking started. Not frantic. Measured. Like someone who knew she was awake. Like someone who knew she would answer.
