I follow her up a spiral staircase that feels like the first one but wrong—the stones are warm, the air smells of cloves, and every window shows a different ocean. At the top, a room with a single page in a frame, written in a script that moves as I watch. The woman says the page holds the spiral's first true word, and that I spoke it once before I was invented. She hands me a knife and tells me to cut the page from its frame if I want to remember. I don't trust her, but my hand moves before I decide. The page comes free, and the lighthouse groans.
