About this listen

The PADSDads Podcast is a podcast from Down Syndrome UK, a registered national charity in the UK, where Dads of children with Down syndrome share their experiences.

The podcast encourages Dads to reach out and support each other - but at the same time, we completely understand if you're not there yet. If you're not ready to talk maybe you are ready to listen, and we hope this podcast provides both useful information as well as comfort to Dads who are coming to terms with a diagnosis.

You can find out more about DSUK at downsyndromeuk.co.uk - search for "Positive About Down Syndrome" on social media - and search for the PADSDads and PADSDads-to-be private groups on Facebook.

  • Richard: Florence's Dad
    Jun 17 2023

Ben chats to Richard in this episode of the PADSDads Podcast, who's Dad to Florence.

Richard and Ben have an interesting conversation about milestones - Florence is a twin and her twin brother Louis is a typically developing child. Richard talks about how he can see differences between the twins - but it isn't always what you'd expect. For example, Florence has got a much better throwing arm than Louis! It leads to a conversation about milestones in general, and about how every child is different.

  • Karl: Orson's Dad
    Jun 17 2023

In this episode, Ben meets Karl who's Dad to two year old Orson.

Karl has always wanted to be a Dad, and in this conversation he talks about how he became a parent through surrogacy. Interestingly, Karl talks about how thorough the surrogacy process is and some of the questions he and his partner Nick had to answer - including how they would feel if there was a chance of their child being born with Down syndrome.

When during the pregnancy a chance of Down syndrome was raised, Karl talks about how it didn't faze him - he couldn't wait to be a Dad, and it really didn't matter to him. He talks about how Orson is constantly challenging other people's perception of Down syndrome and what people with Down syndrome can do, and how proud he is of his first son.

  • Rich: Asher's Dad
    Jun 17 2023

In this episode of the PADSDads Podcast, Ben meets Rich Henshall who's Dad to two year old Asher.

Asher was born seven weeks early, and it was after he was born that they found out about his Down syndrome diagnosis. Rich admits that the news, in his words, "took the wind out of our sails a bit, but 2 years on and we're finally finding our feet... It's been quite a journey!"
