Welcome to the Cafe, Antoine, “The French Guy” joins Host Pikke Allen, the “Paris Adventuress” for the series on Wine Tasting for the rest of us who are not wine experts but enjoy wine with our family, friends and colleagues. Antoine and Pikke open several bottles each show. They do the tasting so you don’t have to! We’ll take a chance on both recommended and some mystery bottles. We’ll start with French wines, easily accessible in the US market but also we will add California wines to the mix for those of you who want an insider take on our local wines.

Key details regarding the relationship between French and California vintners:

* The Blight (1860s-1880s): Phylloxera, an American insect, decimated European vineyards. French scientists, including Jules-Émile Planchon, discovered that grafting European vines (Vitis vinifera) onto resistant American rootstocks was the solution.

* French Intervention in CA: While California also suffered from blight later, French influence came more in the form of sharing expertise, techniques, and, much later, investment in California vineyards following the 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, which validated California wines.

* 1976 Judgment of Paris: British merchant Steven Spurrier organized a blind tasting where Californian wines, judged by French experts, outperformed top French wines, cementing California’s reputation.

* Exchange of Knowledge: Many French winemakers and experts helped establish Napa Valley as a premier wine region in the decades following the 1976 event, bringing traditional techniques to American soil
