About this listen

Welcome to the Remote Chay podcast! Here we invite experts to talk with us about two overlapping themes. First, how do we research areas of the globe with extremely limited accessibility due to surveillance and state restrictions? We have developed a methodological approach called “remote ethnography” which we invite our guests to discuss, supplement and expand. Second, what can we say about what is happening in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region? This is one of these regions that is notoriously difficult to research – both epistemologically and ethically. All of our guests provide answers to one of these two questions, many to both. Remote Chay is an ongoing conversation and we invite all of our listeners to participate in it – comment, reach out, share and discuss. We look forward to the exchange! Remote Chay is a podcast started in 2024 by the team of EU-funded project “Remote Ethnography of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region,” an interdisciplinary project run in collaboration between Univerzita Palackého v Olomouc, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg and Université libre de Bruxelles.2023 - 2025 by the REMOTE XUAR project Social Sciences

  • Research in Times of Global Surveillance
    Sep 8 2025

Nyrola Elimä, executive director of the Wild Pigeon Collective, has for years been at the forefront of research on the Uyghurs and their homelands. Particularly she takes a closer look at the human rights violations and atrocities the Chinese state has committed in the region in the past decade. Nyrola's work is international. It includes researching forced labour and the complicity of western companies as well as the transnational repression perpetrated by the Chinese Communist Party when they try to silence Uyghurs across the globe – including the voice of Nyrola herself.

  • A conversation on Uyghur cultural maintenance in the diaspora
    Jun 13 2025

In this episode, we discuss some challenges to the maintenance of Uyghur cultures and identities in the diaspora in times of crisis. Rebecca Clothey and Dilmurat Mahmut have co-edited a volume published by Routledge in 2024 titled Uyghur Identity and Culture: A Global Diaspora in a Time of Crisis. Our conversation is based on their book and their own research on different diasporic Uyghur communities.
