The DAR formed during a wave of patriotic interest in the late 19th century, partly in response to women being excluded from the Sons of the American Revolution. Early efforts focused on preserving Revolutionary War history, but it quickly grew into a major service organization.
Notable projects include:
* Maintaining historic properties and a museum at national headquarters in Washington, D.C. (featuring decorative arts and exhibitions).
* Supporting DAR Schools and educational initiatives.
* Marking patriot graves and contributing to war efforts (e.g., during the Spanish-American War and World Wars).
* Current focus on America’s 250th anniversary (Semiquincentennial) in 2026, with events, patriot markers, educational programs highlighting diverse patriots, and community celebrations.
Prominent past and present members include First Ladies (e.g., Caroline Harrison, Eleanor Roosevelt, Rosalynn Carter, Barbara Bush, Laura Bush), politicians, military officers, and entertainers.
Today, the DAR describes itself as a volunteer service organization whose members reflect a range of backgrounds and local communities, with an emphasis on heritage, education, and patriotism.
