👣 In context of the recent call for anonymous social media accounts to be banned (in anti-racism campaigns), we talk about the undervalued havens that anonymous Instagram accounts provide for him and others in the LGBTQ+ community, since he cannot share his real name due to security fears.

  • AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE & ISOLATION
    Aug 18 2021
Talking to Jamie about what it's like to be diagnosed with chronic conditions (Axial Spondyloarthritis and Crohns) at the age of 19. 👣 We discuss the spiritual perspective he now takes towards pain, small steps everyone can take to reduce inflammation, the isolating measures he took to improve his health and how he has now found a sense of balance. 👣 To prioritise health, Jamie had to step away from the crowd and seem a bit like an outcast in his life habits, choosing to Be rather than Belong. From difficulty walking to now being free of pain for 2 years - his journey is inspiring. 👣 Jamie has now founded an organisation @yogaforas with Jeff, a 76 year old friend with AS, and has dedicated himself to helping others in similar situations to him... 👣 Both Jamie and I have recently-diagnosed autoimmune conditions, mine being Hashimoto's, so hearing his perspective is useful and I hope it helps others too. 👣 More than 6% of the UK now live with an autoimmune condition, with 80% being women. This number is on the rise. 👣 If you like my content, follow @tobeorbelong on Instagram and listen on Spotify and YouTube 🙏

  • CURIOSITY IN CRISIS
    Apr 3 2021

Joining us from Trinidad and Tobago, Sunita discusses what it takes to establish and head up an unprecedented temporary education project for refugees/displaced children in Trinidad (on behalf of an NGO), amidst the Venezuelan refugee crisis.

👣 In 2018, Sunita was appointed Global Goodwill Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago, and she now reports on international migration for 5 caribbean sub-regional countries.

👣 What can she teach us, as the world emerges from lockdown, about spotting trauma in others, particularly young people who may be highly skilled at hiding it? And how do you do this with sensitivity?

👣 What is her advice for sparking curiosity and joy in the future generation, based on her experience of doing so in the most chaotic and disruptive of times?

👣To Be or Belong: the podcast where I talk to inspirational outsiders who go against the grain and - as I like to say - choose to 'be' rather than 'belong'.

  • AUTHENTICITY. IS IT REAL?
    Mar 26 2021

Actor, writer, mental health advocate and founder of the Cup of Tea podcast, Riel John-Baptiste is a multi-faceted talent with a rich story to tell.

I discuss with him the trending buzzword: 'authenticity. Being authentic seems to be an imperative of our time. But what does it all mean?

We talk about how Riel's personal journey with mental health has shaped his relationship with self and question: How do we find this 'self' that we are supposed to be true to? How can we succeed when quitting a job and pursuing a passion? What is it like to speak your truth and be vulnerable as a man? How can we be truthful in a world that only wants to hear positive things? Is authenticity something worth aiming for?
