They discuss how competing political systems shaped DP communities in occupied Germany, her project Setting Up Shop in the House of the Hangman on Jewish economic life after the Holocaust, and her work on postwar European cinema, including The Search and Europe’s War Children. The conversation also explores the role of cities like Munich in DP integration and the challenges of reconstructing everyday life from fragmented archives.

In the 20th episode of the migration history podcast “Transit”, Michal Frankl talks with Franziska Lamp-Miechowiecki about results from his recently finished ERC-project “Unlikely Refuge. Refugees and Citizens in East-Central Europe in the 20th century” as well as about his previous research on the role of “stateless spaces” and the experience of the “no man’s land” in East-Central European border regions in the late 1930s. Frankl also discusses his research on post-communist refugee policies in the 1990s as well as his more recent endeavours in the field of citizen-science to create archives by and about migrants and refugees.

Zudem wird reflektiert, welche Lehren Europa aus den Fluchtbewegungen der Vergangenheit – insbesondere aus den Jahren 2015/16 – gezogen hat und welch zentrale Rolle Kommunen im Umgang mit Geflüchteten spielen.
