About this listen

On the day of the Oppenheimer premiere, Extradition Order ran a night of investigation into the times, science and history of J Robert Oppenheimer, recorded in the Betsy Trotwood.

Extradition Order released their concept album about Oppenheimer - “American Prometheus” - back in 2020, and were bemused, but flattered when Christopher Nolan released his cinematic homage. Both film and album are portraits of an extraordinary individual - but what about his context? The science, the global politics, the changes to the academic and military spheres that made it possible to construct the bomb? Featuring nuclear physicist Dr Laetitia Canete and historian Asst Professor Elizabeth Ingleson, this four-part miniseries talks us through the science, economics and politics of how a nuclear bomb gets made.

We're Not Kids Anymore is an irregular night put on by Extradition Order in central London, exploring art, theatre, history, science fiction…all the good stuff we're too old to ignore.

In this first episode of We're Not Kids Anymore's Oppenheimer Special we hear from nuclear physicist Dr Laetitia Canete and historian Asst Professor Elizabeth Ingleson on how the period of history that Oppenheimer lived through saw science become more focused and prescriptive, just as the progressive era analysed and compartmentalised people social and racially.

As ever, the episode is bridged with the inane observations of Extradition Order's Rosie Beard and Alastair Harper.

An acceleration of discovery and delivery, exploring the militarisation of scientific life and the move of Oppenheimer’s scientific life from one of borderless theoretical discovery to being the tool of a nation state delivering the practical outcomes he was ordered to. In this second episode, nuclear physicist Dr Laetitia Canete and historian Asst Professor Elizabeth Ingleson take us through how the world leading work of Einstein became out of date moments after discovery and how fission was discovered by Otto Hahn, Fritz Strassmann and Lise Meitner. What were the contributions of individuals like Heisenberg and Pauli, and what were the social and scientific consequences. As ever, the episode is bridged with the inane observations of Extradition Order's Rosie Beard and Alastair Harper.
