  • What Is A Weird Idea?
    Jul 17 2020
Greetings, Gentlebeing. In this weeks episode, the first of the first season, I am asking the question, "What is a weird idea?" and giving my answer. To me a weird idea has four qualities: The weird feeling - the weirding It is different for everyone Familiarity Originality and Authenticity The weird feeling or the weirding is a definite feeling that accompanies a good weird fiction tale. This feeling and the path to it is different for everyone. The one thing in common however is familiarity. Familiarity is so important to the joke and punchline structure of weird fiction. Finally your weird idea must be original, it must tear down cliches and symbols, and it must be authentic - it needs to be the real you. I cover a range in this episode. It's my first. I'm a writer - I'm new to podcasting. If you have questions, comments, or just want say hello you can hit me up on twitter @serenedread. Go to the website, https://www.theweirdfictionwriter.com/a-weird-idea (https://www.theweirdfictionwriter.com/a-weird-idea) to read the companion article and do the homework. Thanks for listening. Hit that subscribe button so you can catch me next week when I discuss weird characters. Until then, Gentlebeing, read, write, and stay weird.

  • Weird Characters
    Jul 23 2020
This one gets a bit weird. Weirder than normal. You'll see. The shout out link is for The Sioux Empire Podcast which I listened to on PocketCast and is available on most players. You can throw a tweet to @podcast_empire and tell Robert the Weird Fiction Writer thinks he's weird. The companion article for this episode is at https://www.theweirdfictionwriter.com/weird-characters (theweirdfictionwriter.com/weird-characters) Also a shout out to thepodcasthost.com with Colin Gray. I got so wrapped up in talking about characters in this episode that I forgot to give you your task. It's this - go make your characters for the article. Put all your writing time into that. I'll post the link to a video of me reading a character interview as soon as it's available.

  • Stepsheets
    Jul 28 2020
I use James N. Frey's stepsheet concept in my story writing, adapted to short story writing. I don't do two versions like Frey does because there are few characters, plots, and concepts to hold in mind for a short story usually. I generally just skip to the reader version of things, though I may put notes in for myself. This is an info blast episode. The concept of the step sheet is simple. I give you another weird idea source which you should check out, the Highland Objects Podcast you can catch their feed https://t.co/VcmYXXFk5N?amp=1 (here) or tweet @highlandobjects. The Highland Objects podcast discusses and describes cultural objects from the Scottish Highlands. Really worth a look. This and others like it. Follow podcasts, read blogs, talk to people who are into the same thing as you. Okay. So sit down. Listen to this one for inspiration and information, then get to work on those step sheets. Hit me up on twitter @serenedread or email thorn@dreadglimpse.com Stay healthy. Stay cool. And stay weird.

  • Writing The Rough Draft
    Aug 15 2020
Greetings, Gentlebeing. I'm back! The new article is posted at: https://www.theweirdfictionwriter.com/the-rough-draft (https://www.theweirdfictionwriter.com/the-rough-draft) In this episode I talk about the concepts that I concentrate on the most when I write a first or rough draft. I mention Randy Ingermannson's books and his Snowflake method that I loosely use a bastardized version of. Here's a link to his stuff on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k=randy+ingermanson&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=randy+ingermanson&ref=nb_sb_noss_1) Glad to be back! Stay weird. Thorn

  • Weird Craft Hiatus Announcement
    Sep 15 2020
So sorry that I haven't been able to get in here. My studio has sat empty at my old house as we moved into our new one. We're dealing with the pressures of losing income and having to find new channels for that due to covid shutdowns and it's taken its toll on my time. I've just gotten my studio flatbedded to my new house and set up. On the up side for me is that I'm producing a show with a large cast and leading an improv group while focusing on my voice acting work from home. Look for the new show, called Live! From the Darkness! on your podcast player. We hope to start dropping the first episodes by the end of October along with a halloween special. If you like improv and you like weird fiction, and you especially love to laugh then make sure you check out Live! From the Darkness! I will get back to this podcast as soon as able. But in the meanwhile, I do appreciate your listening and being a part and to show that appreciation I want to invite you all to send me your stories at thorn@dreadglimpse.com. Send any of your work and I'll respond as soon as I can. This is free consultation and developmental editing. I really have appreciated opening up my podcast host dashboard to see new listeners everyday and while I'm not able to get the show produced I can atleast field some questions. I'll see you all soon. Best of luck. If you want to be notified when I get back to it drop and email to thorn@dreadglimpse.
