TITLE: What Moses Refused to Calculate
SUBTITLE (24 words):
Moses is charged to avenge Israel, then die. He refuses to calculate. The episode reads that refusal — and what calculation cost others.
Parshat Matos opens with a charge. Moses is told to avenge Israel against the Midianites, and only then to die. Every day he delays is a day of his own life extended.
He does not delay. He speaks to the people at once. He will not calculate the cost to his own life. He will not calculate the benefit of Israel remaining longer under his leadership. The Torah calls the response praiseworthy.
Joshua would later face a similar test and calculate. That calculation cost him ten years of life. The episode reads the difference and asks what it means to refuse a calculation the mind cannot help but make.
